King tide flood history for 39 coastal towns, free to use

Every day since 1996 that NOAA's tide gauges recorded water high enough to put roads at risk, by FloodRoute's model, with the observed high, how far it ran above the tide tables, and the streets most at risk. Built for journalists, researchers, planners and neighbors. Download a town as CSV or JSON, or read any page as Markdown.

Estimates, not records of actual flooding.

Each day is NOAA's verified high water at the tide gauge, run through FloodRoute's flood model on today's roads and elevations, in dry weather. Drains, levees, tide gates, rain, road changes and elevation error all mean real conditions differed. Not for property, real-estate, insurance, lending, engineering or legal decisions.

Method

For every day since 1996 we take NOAA's verified highest observed water at the tide gauge, adjust it to the town's prediction station exactly as the live forecast does (the gauge's departure from the tide tables, minus the departure already built into our calibration), and run FloodRoute's flood model on today's road network and street elevations. A day counts when at least one road in the town is at or below that water level by the model's rules. Rain is not included, so wet days were likely worse.

Sources: NOAA CO-OPS verified high/low water levels and tide predictions; road geometry from OpenStreetMap; street elevations from USGS. Gauge gaps are flagged as partial years and left out of averages.

CSV and JSON

Fields

date
Local date in the town's time zone (YYYY-MM-DD). One row per day; the day's highest water is used.
observed_time_utc
Time of that observed high at the gauge, UTC.
gauge_id
NOAA CO-OPS station that measured the water.
gauge_observed_high_ft_mllw
NOAA verified observed high water at the gauge, feet above MLLW.
predicted_high_ft_mllw
NOAA predicted high tide (the tide tables) at the town's prediction station, feet above MLLW.
above_tide_tables_ft
Observed minus predicted at the gauge: storm surge, seasonal anomalies and sea-level rise since the tidal datum epoch.
model_water_ft_mllw
The water level FloodRoute's model ran on (prediction + departure − the departure already in our calibration).
roads_at_risk
Road segments in the town the model puts at or below that water level.
max_severity
Deepest modeled water over any of those roads: 1 possible (under 0.5 ft), 2 likely (0.5–1.5 ft), 3 severe (1.5 ft or more).
deepest_streets
Up to five street names, deepest first.
