# FloodRoute > FloodRoute forecasts which streets in US coastal towns flood at high tide and during king tides: when, how badly and for how long. It combines NOAA tide predictions, measured street elevations and live NOAA gauge readings. Free live maps on the web and a free iPhone app. Coastal tidal flooding only: not river, creek or flash floods. FloodRoute is made in Marin County, California, by Marc Hoag / Skyriven Studios, a project of Axiomic, LLC (contact@axiomic.ai). Forecasts are estimates, not guarantees: never drive or walk through flood water. Generated 2026-10-27T14:39:31.564Z. Forecasts change through the day; each town's Markdown page has the latest. Every page on this site is also available as clean Markdown: add `.md` to its URL (the homepage is `/index.md`), or request the normal URL with `Accept: text/markdown`. Town pages, dated flood-day pages (`/{state}/{town}/{YYYY-MM-DD}`) and flood-history pages (`/{state}/{town}/history`, `/{state}/{town}/history/{YYYY}`) are included. ## What FloodRoute is FloodRoute shows which roads in your town flood at high tide. When, how badly, and for how long. Days before the water arrives. Then neighbors post photos of what’s flooding right now. It's a free iPhone app (https://apps.apple.com/app/id6757653475) and a free website (https://floodroute.com) with live street-level flood maps for 39 coastal towns and neighborhoods in 6 states. Neighbors can open any forecast link in a browser without the app. Free vs Pro: the live map, 7-day street forecasts, town alerts, flood photos, sharing and Call it are free, with no account. FloodRoute Pro ($4.99 a month or $29.99 a year, Family Sharing included) adds alerts for your own street and commute, a ping when neighbors post flooding nearby, surge alerts, the 30-day planner and the what-if simulator. Everyone starts with Pro free until after their town's next big tide; the app never locks you out. Details: https://floodroute.com/index.md#pro. ## How it works 1. **Tide predictions.** NOAA publishes the time and height of every high tide months ahead — and we add the live water level when the bay runs high. 2. **Every road's low point.** We measured the elevation along every street in each town, so we know where the water gets in first. 3. **Which streets flood, when.** Put them together and you get a street-by-street forecast: “Tiburon roads flood Sat 9:40–11:15 AM.” In detail, for Sausalito: FloodRoute combines NOAA tide predictions for the Sausalito station with the elevation of every road segment in Sausalito. When the predicted water level rises above a road's lowest point, it's marked — amber for possible, orange for likely, red for severe. The NOAA San Francisco gauge shows how far the water is actually running above or below the tide tables; that difference is carried into the forecast and fades over the following days. Recent rain raises the next 24 hours. After each high tide, streets stay marked a little longer, because water drains off the road more slowly than the tide falls. Severity at a road: possible (water under 0.5 ft above the road's low point), likely (0.5 to 1.5 ft), severe (1.5 ft or more). King tides are the year's highest predicted tides: a high tide in the top 5% of the year's tide-table highs at the town's NOAA station (about 18 days a year). Water running above the tide tables raises flood forecasts but doesn't make an ordinary high tide a king tide. ## Safety **Forecasts are estimates, not guarantees.** Never drive or walk through flood water: according to the National Weather Service, a foot of moving water can carry away most cars. Turn around, don’t drown. Always follow local authorities and official warnings. FloodRoute does not forecast river, creek or flash flooding, drainage failures, or storm surge beyond what nearby gauges currently measure. ## Frequently asked questions ### What is FloodRoute? FloodRoute forecasts which streets in US coastal towns flood at high tide and during king tides: when, how badly and for how long. It's a free iPhone app and a free website with live street-level flood maps for 39 coastal towns and neighborhoods in 6 states. FloodRoute is made in Marin County, California, by Axiomic, LLC. ### How does FloodRoute know which roads flood? It combines NOAA tide predictions for the nearest tide station with the measured elevation along every street in each town. When the water is forecast to rise above a road's lowest point, the road is marked as possible (amber), likely (orange) or severe (red) flooding, depending on how far the water rises above it. Where a nearby NOAA gauge measures live water levels, the forecast is corrected when the water is running above or below the tide tables. After each high tide, streets stay marked a little longer, because water drains off roads more slowly than the tide falls. Heavy recent rain raises the next 24 hours. ### How accurate are the forecasts? They're estimates, not guarantees. Wind, storm surge, blocked drains, construction and local quirks can change what actually floods, and new towns launch in Beta until community reports confirm them. In backtests at six NOAA stations (October 2024 to October 2026), the live gauge correction cut the typical error in high-tide water levels over the next 24 hours from about 0.57 ft to about 0.23 ft. Treat FloodRoute as a heads-up: **never drive or walk through flood water**, and follow local authorities and official warnings. ### Does FloodRoute forecast river floods or flash floods? No. FloodRoute covers coastal tidal flooding only: streets that flood when high tides and king tides push bay or ocean water onto the road. It does not forecast river, creek or flash flooding, drainage failures, or storm surge beyond what nearby gauges currently measure. For those, follow the National Weather Service and local authorities. ### Is FloodRoute free? What does Pro add? The website is free, and so is the core of the iPhone app: the live flood map and tide scrubber, the 7-day flood outlook, community reports, sharing, calendar feeds, one saved place, and a heads-up before flood windows in your home town (plus a king tide heads-up the evening before). FloodRoute Pro adds street-level alerts for up to three saved places, commute alerts, a ping when a neighbor posts flood photos near your places, surge alerts when the bay runs high, the 30-day planner, the what-if simulator, alerts for more towns and a Pro badge on your posts. Pro is $4.99 a month or $29.99 a year through the App Store, with Family Sharing. Everyone starts with Pro free, with no payment details, until two days after the next notable high tide in their town (at least 7 and at most 30 days). After that the app switches to the free features; you're never locked out. ### Which towns does FloodRoute cover? 39 coastal towns and neighborhoods in 6 states. California: Marin County and San Francisco; Massachusetts: Boston; New York: New York City; Florida: Miami, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale (beta) and North Miami (beta); South Carolina: Charleston (beta); Virginia: Norfolk (beta) and Virginia Beach (beta). Towns marked Beta are new and still being confirmed by community reports. See the [full list of covered towns](https://floodroute.com/towns). ### My town isn't covered. Can you add it? Yes. [Request your town](https://floodroute.com/towns#request) and share your link with neighbors. The most-requested towns get mapped first, and if you leave your email, we'll tell you the day your town launches. ### Does FloodRoute track my location? Do I need an account? There are no accounts. Location access is optional and only used while the app is open. Your location is processed on your device and never leaves it unless you submit a flood report (its pin is public) or choose to attach it to a town request. Saved places and commutes stay on your device and sync through your own iCloud. We don't sell your data or use advertising identifiers. See the [Privacy Policy](https://floodroute.com/privacy). ### Can I share a flood forecast with my neighbors? Yes. Every town and every flood day has its own link, and its preview card shows the forecast in iMessage, Facebook or Nextdoor. Neighbors can open the live map in any browser, with no app needed. You can also subscribe to a town's flood-day calendar or print a flyer for a bulletin board. ### Can I post photos of flooding? Who sees them? Yes, from the FloodRoute app: take the photo with the app's camera while you're in a covered town, near the street you're reporting. Faces are blurred on your phone before anything is uploaded, and every photo is screened automatically before it appears. Posts carry a random pen name, never your name, and show on the map, in the [live photo feed](https://floodroute.com/live), on your town's page and on a public page of that pen name's photos. You can delete everything you've posted from the app's Settings. Never walk or drive into flood water for a photo. ### What is Call it? A free tide-guessing game in the app. Before a big high tide, guess how high the water will get at your area's NOAA tide gauge. After the tide, the gauge settles it: you, your neighbors, or FloodRoute's own forecast. Each area has a 30-day leaderboard ranked by average accuracy. No prizes, purchases or wagering. ### How do I add flood days to my calendar? Open your town's page and tap *Add to calendar*. It's a subscription, so new flood windows appear automatically. On iPhone it opens Calendar; on Android or desktop use the Google Calendar link. ### How do I report flooding or remove a report? Reports are submitted from the FloodRoute app. To flag an inappropriate report, use *Report* on it in the app, or email us with the report link. You can delete everything your device has submitted from the app's Settings. ### How do I manage or cancel my subscription? Subscriptions are handled by Apple: Settings → your name → Subscriptions → FloodRoute. Refunds are handled by Apple at [reportaproblem.apple.com](https://reportaproblem.apple.com). ### Can I put the live map on my website? Yes. News sites, HOAs and neighborhood groups can [embed the live map](https://floodroute.com/press#embed) for free. ## Flood history Flood history: for every covered town, every day since 1996 that NOAA's verified tide-gauge record shows water high enough to put roads at risk by FloodRoute's model (estimates on today's roads, not records of actual flooding), with free CSV/JSON downloads under the Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0. ## Coverage and next flood windows Each line: the town's quotable summary and its next forecast flood window. ### California - **[Sausalito, CA](https://floodroute.com/ca/sausalito.md)**: In Sausalito, roads start to flood when the water at NOAA's Sausalito station reaches about 6.6 ft (MLLW).
